How could cultural institutions look like in the future?

This project was initiated during the COVID-19 lockdown, when access to cultural institutions was restricted. While other industries quickly adopted digital solutions, cultural experiences such as theatre, museums, and cinema remained largely tied to physical attendance. Could this model be challenged?

Problem

In Norway especially, many cultural offers are concentrated in major cities, leaving large parts of the country unable to make use of them. COVID-19 made this imbalance more visible and made us ask whether cultural institutions could find new ways to reach people in more remote areas. At the same time, broader societal shifts raised further questions about what role cultural institutions might need to take on in order to remain relevant.

Approach:

With a rapidly changing digital landscape and more flexible ways of engaging audiences, we wanted to understand how younger generations would approach these challenges on their own. This led us to design a two-day, co-creation-based workshop in which we acted as facilitators, giving participants the freedom to explore, experiment, and imagine what cultural institutions could mean to them in the future. Participatory workshop in which we acted as facilitators, giving participants the freedom to explore, experiment, and imagine what cultural institutions could mean to them in the future.

Solution

As a result of the project, we delivered a set of personas, a video documenting and a key deliverable: a report. The report explored the identified challenges and outlined suggested next steps, including a proposed roadmap.

Alfa Laval

I worked with Alfa Laval over two years as a consultant representing EGGS design. Initially creating UI designs and prototypes for on-shore HMI screens, and later leading the rollout of a company-wide digital design system. This included change management, close collaboration with developers, stakeholder and project management, and leading a small design team on the EGGS side to deliver design system components, data visualizations, and illustrations.
